Modern Warfare 4’s campaign became available through Early Access on October 16, 2026. Eligible digital buyers can experience all 16 missions ahead of the game’s worldwide launch on October 23.

Activision officially announced the start of Early Access on October 16. Both the Standard Digital Edition and Vault Edition provide access on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.

The early campaign follows a major military conflict on the Korean Peninsula alongside Captain Price’s separate investigation. Players can also earn completion rewards that carry into Multiplayer and DMZ when Modern Warfare 4 launches worldwide on October 23.

The important difference from earlier announcements is that access is now live. Activision originally revealed the October 16 campaign date in June, but its latest statement confirms the full story is available to eligible players.

Early campaign access applies to qualifying digital purchases, not simply to anyone who owns a previous Call of Duty title.

How to Play Modern Warfare 4 Campaign Early

Players who have digitally pre-ordered or pre-purchased Modern Warfare 4 can access the complete campaign now.

The eligibility requirements are straightforward:

  1. Purchase the Standard Digital Edition or Vault Edition of Modern Warfare 4.
  2. Use a supported platform: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam, Battle.net, or Nintendo Switch 2.
  3. Install the game and any campaign content required by your platform.
  4. Launch Modern Warfare 4 using the account associated with your digital purchase.
  5. Open the Campaign section to begin playing.

Activision says the early-access benefit remains available until the official October 23 launch. Eligible customers can therefore still purchase a digital edition during this period and begin the campaign before the general release.

There is no requirement to purchase the more expensive Vault Edition solely for early story access. The Standard Digital Edition includes the same campaign benefit.

Physical editions do not carry the announced digital pre-order entitlement.

The 16-Mission Campaign Follows Two Connected Conflicts

Modern Warfare 4’s story unfolds during a major North Korean invasion of South Korea. At the same time, Captain John Price follows a separate mission that takes him beyond the traditional military chain of command.

Another part of the campaign focuses on Private Park Hyun Jun, a South Korean soldier fighting alongside his unit as North Korean forces advance deeper into the country.

The second follows Price, now operating as an outlaw, as he investigates the figures connected to a much broader threat.

Activision has confirmed campaign locations including the Korean Peninsula, Paris, New York, and Mumbai.

Its official descriptions point to several different mission styles, including trench combat in Korea, close-quarters fighting in New York, vehicle pursuits through Paris, and nighttime SAS operations in Mumbai.

That range of environments is important. Infinity Ward is bringing different styles of combat into the campaign, moving between large-scale military confrontations and smaller, more tactical missions. This approach gives the story room to explore both the wider conflict and the personal experiences of those involved.

The campaign’s 16 missions are confirmed, but Activision has not established a universal completion time. Difficulty settings, exploration, and individual playstyle will determine how long a complete playthrough takes.

Campaign Rewards Will Carry Into Multiplayer and DMZ

Campaign Early Access also gives players time to unlock items before the other major modes become available.

According to Activision, progression through the story awards Operators, calling cards, emblems, loading screens, and XP bonuses.

The announced Operator rewards include Cho, Dallas, Luca, Oh-Ji, Kal, Dunn, West, and Park.

Other rewards include the No More Rules Calling Card, Ready Line Loading Screen, Gone Dark Emblem, Double XP Tokens, and Double Weapon XP Tokens.

These rewards will become usable in Multiplayer and DMZ at the full game’s launch on October 23.

For players who prefer completing the single-player experience before moving into competitive modes, the early-access period creates a useful separation between the two.

However, unlocking multiplayer rewards during the campaign should not be confused with gaining unrestricted access to the full multiplayer game before launch.

Modern Warfare 4 Is Not Included With Game Pass at Launch

Xbox and PC players should be aware of one important purchasing restriction.

Activision confirmed on October 15 that Modern Warfare 4 will launch as a standalone release rather than joining Xbox Game Pass immediately.

The company currently plans to bring the title to Game Pass during the Holiday 2027 period.

That means an active Game Pass subscription alone does not qualify someone for Modern Warfare 4 Campaign Early Access. A separate qualifying digital purchase is required.

The situation differs from Battlefield 6, which recently joined selected Game Pass plans. Our Battlefield 6 Xbox Game Pass guide explains the available subscription options for that game.

For Modern Warfare 4, buyers should compare the digital editions and their included benefits before committing to a purchase.

What Happens on October 20 and October 23?

Activision has divided Modern Warfare 4’s launch into three stages.

October 16 — Campaign Early Access: Eligible digital buyers can begin the complete single-player story.

October 20 — DMZ Early Access: Qualifying digital buyers gain access to the new extraction-focused DMZ experience.

October 23 — Worldwide Launch: Modern Warfare 4 officially releases, with its complete Multiplayer and DMZ offerings becoming available.

The staggered schedule is particularly useful for anyone intending to experience the campaign without rushing through it alongside the multiplayer launch.

If you’re planning to complete the campaign before October 23, GamersVora’s Game Completion Planner can help estimate a personal finishing schedule once you’ve assessed how much playtime remains.

Actual start times and platform access can vary by region, and Activision notes that service interruptions may affect availability.

Is Campaign Early Access Worth Buying Modern Warfare 4 For?

For someone who already intends to purchase the game digitally, Campaign Early Access is a practical bonus.

It provides the opportunity to finish the story, understand the new conflict, and collect campaign progression rewards before the full release.

The benefit is less convincing as a reason to buy the game on its own.

Early access does not provide a separate exclusive campaign. It simply opens the complete story ahead of the general launch, and the extra week cannot tell buyers whether the campaign will ultimately meet their expectations.

What is certain is that the full 16-mission campaign is now playable for eligible customers. DMZ Early Access follows on October 20, ahead of the October 23 worldwide launch.

For players planning to experience every part of Modern Warfare 4, the next few days offer a chance to finish the story before attention shifts to Multiplayer and DMZ.
