FOV Converter

Translate a rectilinear field of view between horizontal and vertical conventions. Compare two aspect ratios while preserving vertical FOV, the convention used for this comparison. The diagram shows angular coverage, not a game screenshot.

How to use it

Enter your FOV, choose whether it is horizontal or vertical, and select source and target aspect ratios. Calculate to see both axes at each ratio. Confirm which axis your game setting uses.

How it works

Horizontal FOV = 2 × atan(tan(vertical FOV / 2) × aspect ratio). The inverse divides by aspect ratio. Conversion preserves vertical FOV and assumes a rectilinear perspective camera.

Limitations

Games may use a fixed 4:3 reference, crop the view, limit ultrawide support or change FOV during aiming. This tool does not model those behaviors or match mouse sensitivity. Input must be greater than 0 and less than 179 degrees.

Frequently asked questions

Will the converted number work in every game?

Only if the game uses the selected axis and actual aspect ratio with a rectilinear camera. Check the game documentation.

Why does ultrawide increase horizontal FOV?

With vertical FOV held constant, a wider viewport includes more of the scene horizontally.
