Game Download Time Calculator
Estimate how long your next game download will take. Enter the actual download size rather than the final installed size, select the units shown by your launcher or internet provider, and adjust efficiency to allow for a connection that runs below its advertised speed.
Calculations run locally in your browser. This tool does not upload your inputs. Shared links contain the calculator settings you choose to share; Steam IDs are excluded.
How to use it
Enter the file size and its unit, then your download speed and speed unit. Use 100% for ideal conditions or a lower efficiency for a planning estimate. Select Calculate to compare both times.
How it works
Time in seconds = bytes × 8 ÷ bits per second. GB means 1,000,000,000 bytes; GiB means 1,073,741,824 bytes. Mbps means 1,000,000 bits per second, while MB/s means 1,000,000 bytes per second. Adjusted time divides the ideal time by efficiency / 100.
Limitations
This is an estimate, not an internet speed test. Wi-Fi, congestion, the download server, other devices and disk writes can slow downloads. Unpacking, patching and installation time are not included.
Frequently asked questions
Why is MB/s different from Mbps?
There are eight bits in a byte. A 100 Mbps connection has an ideal transfer rate of 12.5 MB/s.
Which efficiency should I choose?
Use a measured sustained rate with 100%, or apply a lower percentage to an advertised connection speed. Avoid applying the same slowdown twice.
