10 Best PS5 Games to Play in 2026 — Our Top Picks

Our ten best PS5 games to play in 2026 include Astro Bot, Elden Ring, Baldur's Gate 3 and more. Find out what makes each game worth playing and which one suits your preferences.

Astro Bot, an Elden Ring Tarnished warrior, and Kratos from God of War Ragnarök featured in GamersVora's best PS5 games to play in 2026.

Buying a PlayStation 5 game is easy. Deciding which one deserves your next 20, 50 or even 100 hours is much harder.

Some games make a strong first impression but eventually settle into familiar routines. Others take several hours to reveal why their combat, exploration or storytelling deserves your attention. Then there are games that have a relatively simple idea and execute it so well that they never need a huge open world or a lengthy campaign.

That difference matters when choosing the best PS5 games to play in 2026.

The PS5 library now covers an enormous range of experiences, from demanding action RPGs and elaborate fantasy adventures to cinematic superhero games, survival horror and more relaxed platforming. Older releases are still competing with newer titles for players’ time, and a game’s release year alone tells us very little about how enjoyable it will be today.

For this list, I wanted to look beyond the usual argument about which title has the biggest world, the longest campaign or the most impressive graphics.

What interests me more is how effectively a game delivers the experience it promises.

A challenging game should make learning and improvement satisfying. A story-driven adventure needs characters and situations worth caring about. An open world should encourage exploration rather than simply filling a map with repetitive tasks. And a shorter game should justify its price through the quality of its design, not an inflated estimate of how long it takes to finish.

I also think the PS5 itself deserves some consideration. Responsive controls, DualSense features, fast loading and thoughtful use of the hardware can contribute to a better experience, although they do not automatically make a game better than a multiplatform alternative.

Our selections include ten games across different genres, with recommendations for several types of players. They are all playable on PS5 as of this edition.

The ranking is deliberately comparative rather than a universal verdict. A racing enthusiast might get considerably more enjoyment from the game at number ten than from several titles above it. Someone who dislikes demanding boss fights may find our second-place recommendation exhausting rather than rewarding.

There are practical differences to consider, too. Several games work entirely as solo adventures, others provide optional multiplayer, and certain features require an internet connection or PlayStation Plus. Campaign lengths also vary considerably, so the estimated time to beat each game is provided where a meaningful estimate exists.

The idea is simple: by the time you reach number one, you should have a better understanding not only of which games I recommend, but also which one makes the most sense for the way you like to play.

BEFORE YOU PLAY

How to use this shortlist

Made for: PS5 owners looking for worthwhile single-player adventures, RPGs, horror, racing and other standout experiences in 2026.

How we chose

I focused on gameplay quality, distinctive design, replay value, storytelling where appropriate, and how convincingly each title delivers on its core idea. A long campaign was not automatically an advantage, and impressive production values were not enough to guarantee a high ranking.

I also considered how each game fits the PS5, including controller features, accessibility options and current availability.

One important decision was to avoid filling the list with similar open-world adventures. I wanted this list to cover a wider range of gaming experiences rather than fill it with titles that follow similar gameplay formulas.
The rankings reflect my editorial comparison of official game information, documented features and independent coverage, rather than a claim that every game was personally completed or benchmarked.

No fixed completion time — ongoing racing simulation with structured campaign progression

Not every memorable PS5 experience needs a dramatic storyline or a final boss. Gran Turismo 7 makes the simple act of learning to drive a little better feel like meaningful progression.

What I find particularly convincing is the way its driving school, license tests, car collection and track challenges appeal to different levels of interest. You can approach it as a car enthusiast discovering vehicles or take the racing much more seriously by improving braking points, cornering and consistency.

I've placed it at number ten because its focus on realistic driving and racing appeals to a more specific audience than the action and adventure games ranked above it. Players who prefer immediate arcade-style excitement may find its progression and attention to driving technique less appealing.

However, for someone interested in cars and racing, I would not hesitate to recommend it ahead of several higher-ranked games.

    Why it made the list

Its driving systems, car collection and structured skill development provide a different kind of long-term progression from the action-adventure and RPG titles dominating many PS5 recommendations.

Good to know: An internet connection is required for most functionality, including substantial parts of the solo progression. PS Plus is required for online multiplayer. PS VR2 support is optional on PS5.

  2. THE COUNTDOWN

Sometimes moving through a game's world is enjoyable enough to become a reason to keep playing. Marvel's Spider-Man 2 understands that better than most open-world adventures.

Switching between Peter Parker and Miles Morales creates variety in both combat and storytelling, while the expanded New York setting gives players considerable freedom to move between missions. The Web Wings also make travelling across the city feel different from conventional fast-travel systems.

I think its greatest strength is immediacy. You can return after a few days away and quickly find something entertaining to do without relearning an elaborate set of RPG systems.

The reason I placed it below the larger adventures is that its open-world activities and progression are comparatively familiar. It is an accessible, energetic superhero experience, but it does not offer the same depth of player choice as the strongest RPGs in this shortlist.

    Why it made the list

Few games make open-world movement as entertaining as Spider-Man 2, and its combination of traversal, superhero combat and approachable missions makes it particularly easy to recommend to action-focused players.

Good to know: The campaign is designed exclusively for single-player, with no cooperative multiplayer mode. Familiarity with Marvel's Spider-Man and Miles Morales helps with the characters and story, although the game introduces its central conflict.

  3. THE COUNTDOWN

Approx. 11–14 hours — typical first playthrough with some exploration

Resident Evil Requiem approaches horror from two distinct perspectives, shifting between vulnerable survival and more aggressive, combat-focused encounters.
Grace Ashcroft's sections emphasize vulnerability, investigation and careful management of limited resources. Leon S. Kennedy brings a more combat-oriented approach, creating a contrast between trying to survive danger and being equipped to confront it directly.
That difference is the reason I chose Requiem over simply adding another familiar action-horror recommendation.
The tension is not built around continuous combat. Much of its appeal comes from how differently the player must think when the character, available equipment and immediate objective change.
I would rank it higher for someone specifically looking for a modern survival-horror experience. Its relatively focused campaign and disturbing content make it less broadly suitable than the larger adventures above it, but they also help give the game a stronger identity.

    Why it made the list

The contrast between Grace's survival-focused gameplay and Leon's action-heavy sections gives Requiem an effective way to vary tension while retaining the resource management and unsettling encounters central to Resident Evil.

Good to know: The game features graphic horror and intense violence. Players can switch between first-person and third-person camera perspectives, and difficulty settings influence the experience.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is at its strongest when the journey matters as much as the destination.
Cloud and his companions travel across a series of large environments, with character relationships, exploration and an elaborate combat system sharing the spotlight. Battles combine direct action with tactical decisions, giving players reasons to think about party composition and abilities rather than relying on reflexes alone.
What makes it especially appealing is the attention given to its characters. Their interactions help make the adventure feel personal even as the world and overall stakes grow considerably.
My biggest reservation is its scale. Optional activities and minigames provide variety, but anyone trying to clear every icon and objective may find the pacing uneven.
I would put it considerably higher for players already invested in Final Fantasy VII Remake. For a general PS5 audience, though, its lengthy commitment and narrative continuity make it a more considered purchase.

    Why it made the list

Its party-based combat, extensive environments and character-focused storytelling provide a substantial RPG adventure with a different rhythm from both fully turn-based games and conventional open-world action titles.

Good to know: This is the second installment in the Final Fantasy VII remake project. It can be approached independently, but playing Final Fantasy VII Remake first provides valuable narrative and character context.

Approx. 20–30 hours — story-focused play, varying with exploration and difficulty

Ghost of Yōtei takes the familiar appeal of a wandering warrior adventure and gives it a new character, setting and personal conflict.
Atsu's journey across the landscapes surrounding Mount Yōtei is driven by revenge, but the open-world structure allows players to decide how much time they spend pursuing targets, improving equipment and exploring the region.
I think the setting is one of the most persuasive reasons to choose it. The natural environments are not merely background scenery; they contribute to the feeling of travelling through an unfamiliar place while slowly building the abilities needed for difficult encounters.
Its combat also rewards attention to weapons and enemy behaviour, making preparation more meaningful than simply collecting upgrades.
The trade-off is that players who are already tired of large third-person action adventures may recognize some of its underlying structure. Even so, it provides a compelling balance of exploration, character motivation and combat.

    Why it made the list

The combination of Atsu's personal revenge story, flexible exploration and weapon-focused combat makes it a strong recommendation for players who want a large adventure without committing to a traditional RPG.

Good to know: Ghost of Yōtei is a standalone story, so playing Ghost of Tsushima is not required. Its Legends multiplayer mode requires an internet connection and PlayStation Plus for online play.

  6. THE COUNTDOWN

    Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Gustave, Maelle and other Expedition 33-inspired adventurers standing against a surreal fantasy landscape with floating architecture, waterfalls and dramatic skies.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 proves that turn-based combat does not have to mean sitting back and watching animations play out.
Combat blends turn-based strategy with real-time defensive actions, requiring players to time their dodges, parries and counterattacks while planning each move. That combination changes the player's relationship with each encounter: choosing the right ability matters, but executing defensive actions can be equally important.
What stood out to me during the comparison is how effectively this design separates Expedition 33 from conventional RPG recommendations. It asks for both strategic thinking and active concentration without abandoning the underlying party-building systems.
The mysterious world, distinctive artistic direction and emotionally focused story give those mechanics a strong narrative setting.
I would hesitate to recommend it to someone who wants a completely relaxed turn-based experience. Players uncomfortable with precise timing may find its combat demanding. For everyone willing to engage with that challenge, however, it offers a particularly memorable RPG structure.

    Why it made the list

It successfully combines party-based tactical decisions with reactive combat, giving players a distinctive alternative to both conventional turn-based RPGs and purely action-driven adventures.

Good to know: Although combat is turn-based, dodging and parrying require real-time input. Character builds, equipment and difficulty settings influence how demanding encounters become.

  7. THE COUNTDOWN

    God of War Ragnarök

A powerful warrior inspired by Kratos stands in a snowy Norse landscape with an axe, dramatic mountains, and a cold cinematic atmosphere.

Approx. 25–30 hours — main story

God of War Ragnarök is a reminder that spectacular combat becomes more meaningful when the characters have something worth fighting for.
Kratos and Atreus continue their journey through Norse mythology, with their changing relationship providing the emotional foundation for the adventure. The game also expands the range of enemies, equipment and combat possibilities while retaining the close, deliberate fighting style established in God of War (2018).
What I value most about Ragnarök is the connection between its narrative stakes and the player-facing adventure. Major encounters, quieter conversations and exploration all contribute to the same overarching journey.
It does have a substantial amount of optional content, and the game's pacing will not appeal equally to players who prefer uninterrupted action.
Still, for someone who enjoys strong character development alongside weighty combat, I think Ragnarök remains one of the most convincing recommendations on PS5.

    Why it made the list

Its combination of character development, deliberate combat and carefully constructed encounters gives it a stronger emotional and mechanical foundation than many large action-adventure games.

Good to know: Playing God of War (2018) first is strongly recommended for the story. The Valhalla content is a separate post-campaign experience and should not be included in the main-story completion estimate.

  8. THE COUNTDOWN

    Baldur's Gate 3

A group of fantasy adventurers featuring a warrior, elf, mage and other companions standing before an ancient castle beneath a dramatic red sky, inspired by Baldur’s Gate 3.
    Genres
Computer RPG, Turn-Based Tactical RPG, Fantasy

    September 6, 2023 — PS5
    Developer
    Larian Studios
    Time to beat
Approx. 70–80 hours — main story, based on community completion estimates

Most role-playing games give players choices. Baldur's Gate 3 is particularly compelling because those decisions can substantially change the situations that follow.
Dialogue, party composition, exploration and tactical combat frequently intersect. Problems may have several possible solutions, and the game encourages players to experiment with character abilities and their surroundings rather than always following an obvious route.
I think this freedom is its biggest advantage over the more cinematic adventures in the shortlist. You are not simply progressing through a predetermined set of encounters; your approach can alter relationships, quests and outcomes.
The compromise is accessibility. Its systems demand patience, and players unfamiliar with tabletop-inspired RPGs may need time to understand the combat rules and character-building options.
For someone who values agency and replayability above immediate action, however, I would consider Baldur's Gate 3 an even stronger purchase than its third-place position might suggest.

    Why it made the list

Its reactive quests, tactical battles, character-building freedom and meaningful decisions create an unusually flexible RPG experience with considerable replay potential.

Good to know: PS5 supports two-player local split-screen and online parties of up to four players. Online multiplayer requires PlayStation Plus. Expect a substantial learning curve and a lengthy campaign.

  9. THE COUNTDOWN

    Elden Ring

A lone armored Tarnished warrior overlooking a dark fantasy landscape beneath a massive glowing golden Erdtree, inspired by Elden Ring.
    Genres
Open-World Action RPG, Dark Fantasy, Soulslike
    Where to play

    Challenging combat and open-world discovery

    Single-player, Optional Online Multiplayer
    Release
    February 25, 2022
    Developer
    FromSoftware
    Time to beat
Approx. 50–70 hours — main-story-focused play for typical players; highly skill-dependent

Elden Ring makes exploration feel important because the player cannot always predict what waits beyond the next location.
The Lands Between contains dangerous enemies, hidden areas, optional encounters and numerous ways to develop a character. Rather than tightly controlling the route through every challenge, FromSoftware allows players to explore elsewhere, experiment with equipment and return with a different approach.
The more I compared Elden Ring with other large open-world games, the more I valued that freedom. Its world encourages curiosity without making every discovery feel like another item on a checklist.
Combat can be demanding, and the game is often deliberately reluctant to explain everything. That sense of uncertainty is exciting for some players and frustrating for others.
I would rank Elden Ring first for someone who wants difficult encounters, experimentation and genuine exploration. It finishes second here only because its challenge and minimal guidance make it less universally approachable than our top recommendation.

    Why it made the list

Its approach to exploration, character-building and demanding boss encounters rewards curiosity and experimentation more consistently than most conventional open-world RPGs.

Good to know: The game can be played solo. Online multiplayer requires PlayStation Plus on PS5. Combat difficulty is demanding, and the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion is not included in the base game's completion estimate.

  10. THE TOP PICK

    Astro Bot

Approx. 10–12 hours — main story

What makes Astro Bot my number-one choice isn't its size or complexity. It's how quickly the game draws you in with responsive controls, imaginative levels and playful mechanics that remain enjoyable throughout the adventure.
Its levels are built around movement, experimentation, playful abilities and a steady introduction of new ideas. The game continually changes what Astro can do, giving each environment a clear personality without forcing players to memorize complicated systems.
I particularly value how closely the experience connects with the PS5 itself. DualSense feedback, imaginative level design and recognizable PlayStation references contribute to a game that feels purpose-built for the console.
It does not offer the narrative complexity of Baldur's Gate 3 or the freedom of Elden Ring. Some optional challenges can also become demanding despite the cheerful presentation.
Yet when I consider accessibility, creativity, pacing and the consistency of its ideas together, Astro Bot becomes my strongest overall recommendation for someone asking what they should play on PS5.

    Why it made the list

Its inventive level design, responsive platforming and thoughtful integration of PS5 controller features deliver a consistently engaging experience without relying on a lengthy campaign or complicated progression systems.

Good to know: Astro Bot is a standalone paid game, separate from the free Astro's Playroom included with PS5 consoles. It uses DualSense controller features extensively and includes optional challenges beyond the core adventure.

THE LAST WORD

Editor’s final thoughts

The biggest lesson I take from comparing these ten games is that the strongest recommendation depends on what a player actually enjoys doing.
Someone who wants to spend evenings improving their racing technique might find Gran Turismo 7 more rewarding than a story-driven adventure. A player who enjoys difficult encounters and discovering unfamiliar places could spend far longer exploring Elden Ring than completing several of the shorter titles combined.
I would also make an important distinction between two excellent RPG recommendations.
Baldur's Gate 3 is the more convincing choice when freedom, player decisions and tactical experimentation matter most. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is easier to recommend to someone who wants a more focused narrative and combat that combines planning with real-time reactions.
For cinematic action, God of War Ragnarök remains a strong choice, especially after playing its predecessor. Ghost of Yōtei is the alternative I would look at when exploration and roaming through a large environment are higher priorities.
And for horror, Resident Evil Requiem provides a relatively contained experience that does not require the same long-term commitment as an open-world RPG.
So why did I choose Astro Bot as number one?
Not because it has the deepest story or the largest world. It wins because it consistently understands what makes interactive entertainment enjoyable: responsive movement, unexpected ideas, satisfying challenges and very little unnecessary complexity.
That gives it unusually broad appeal, especially for someone who owns a PS5 but has not yet explored the console's strongest games.
If you are buying only one title, I would start by asking yourself three questions: How much challenge do you want? How much time can you commit? And would you rather explore a world, follow a story or master a set of mechanics?
Those answers will probably lead you to a better purchase than simply choosing whichever game happens to rank first.
