Wolverine has spent decades being squeezed into other people’s superhero games. Next week, he finally gets the kind of starring role that seems built for him.
Marvel’s Wolverine launches September 15, 2026 exclusively on PS5, with Marvel’s Spider-Man developer Insomniac Games behind it. But anyone expecting Spider-Man with claws should probably reset those expectations now.
This is a much nastier game.
The combat we’ve seen is violent and deliberately physical. Logan launches himself into enemies, tears through them at close range and can dismember opponents with his adamantium claws. More importantly, Insomniac appears interested in the damaged man carrying those claws around, not just the spectacle they create.
And with the release now only days away, we know considerably more about what kind of Wolverine story Insomniac is trying to tell.

This isn’t Insomniac’s Spider-Man with a Wolverine skin
The obvious comparison is Marvel’s Spider-Man. It’s the same studio, another huge Marvel character and another third-person action game.
The similarities become much less useful once Logan starts fighting.
Spider-Man controls space. He dodges, webs enemies to walls, throws objects across rooms and spends plenty of time above the people trying to hit him.
Wolverine wants to close the distance.
Insomniac describes the combat as fast, fluid and ferocious, with aggressive momentum at its center. Logan can lunge toward enemies, chain claw attacks with kicks and critical strikes, and use special techniques to turn a crowded fight into something considerably less crowded. citeturn0search0turn0search4
That’s an important distinction.
A convincing Wolverine game shouldn’t make you feel as though you’re carefully chipping away at health bars. Logan’s entire fighting identity is built around the fact that he’s willing to take punishment most characters couldn’t survive just to get close enough to return it.
The Rage system seems designed around exactly that idea.
Rage could be what makes combat feel like Wolverine
Logan builds Rage as he fights, and the system operates across three tiers focused on survivability, resilience and eventually outright fury.
There are also Techniques, Special Techniques and Adaptations.
Four Special Techniques can be equipped at once, including attacks such as Tornado Spin, Knee Breaker and Spiral Strike. Adaptations offer another layer of customization, allowing players to alter things such as bullet resistance, Rage effectiveness and parry timing. Insomniac says there are dozens of Adaptations available. citeturn0search0
That gives the combat more interesting possibilities than simply unlocking progressively stronger claw combos.
A Wolverine who absorbs punishment and becomes increasingly dangerous is thematically much more interesting.
And healing is part of that fantasy too. Logan’s regenerative ability means damage doesn’t necessarily carry the same meaning it would for another action hero. The question isn’t just whether you can avoid getting hit.
It’s how much violence you’re prepared to push through to reach the person doing the hitting.
Insomniac isn’t hiding the violence
This is probably the clearest break from the studio’s Spider-Man games.
Enemies can be dismembered, combat is aggressive, and the game doesn’t appear interested in sanitizing what adamantium claws would actually do to someone.
Insomniac has been unusually explicit about that direction, describing the game as unapologetically violent and gory. Players who don’t want the full effect will have options to alter dynamic blood and dismemberment. Adult-language filters are available as well. citeturn0search0
The gore matters for more than shock value.
Wolverine’s violence has always been part of the contradiction at the center of the character. He’s capable of extraordinary brutality while repeatedly trying to prove—to others and himself—that brutality isn’t all he is.
That conflict appears to be sitting right in the middle of Insomniac’s story.
Logan walked away. Three years later, he has to come back
Insomniac isn’t adapting a Wolverine movie or retelling one specific comic storyline.
This is its own continuity.
Three years before the game begins, Logan walked away from Team X, a mutant task force. He eventually returns when the group faces a growing threat from industrialist Bolivar Trask, whose belief in human superiority has turned mutants into targets for abduction and experimentation. citeturn0search4turn0search5
There is another important wrinkle: mutants aren’t operating from a position of strength in this world.
This isn’t an established X-Men universe where Xavier’s school is already full of heroes ready to mobilize. Insomniac describes mutantkind as lacking the safe havens and organized heroic groups we’d normally associate with X-Men stories. citeturn0search0
That makes Trask more dangerous.
It also makes Logan more important than he probably wants to be.
He’s hunting answers about his own fragmented past while simultaneously being pulled into a much larger fight over mutant survival.
Jean Grey isn’t the only familiar mutant
Logan won’t be handling all of this alone.
Jean Grey has a significant role, and the story trailer has already shown a strained confrontation between her and Logan. Team X also brings some particularly interesting personalities into the story, including Mystique and Sabretooth. citeturn0search1turn0search5
Then there’s Nathaniel Essex.
Comic readers will immediately recognize why that name deserves attention.
Rather than revealing exactly where Insomniac intends to take him, it’s enough to say that the studio is pulling from a much deeper section of mutant history than Wolverine alone.
The villains are similarly recognizable.
Omega Red is confirmed, as is Deathstrike, while The Hand appears as another enemy faction. Bolivar Trask and his Reavers provide the wider anti-mutant threat. citeturn0search0turn0search1
That combination gives Insomniac room to tell a Wolverine story without immediately turning the game into an X-Men ensemble adventure.
Wolverine is going global
Logan won’t spend the entire game cutting his way through one city.
His hunt moves through several parts of the world, including the frozen Canadian wilderness, Tokyo and Madripoor, Marvel’s fictional island nation with a particularly long history of attracting criminals and trouble. citeturn0search4
It’s a good fit.
Wolverine has never belonged to one city in the same way Spider-Man belongs to New York. His history stretches across countries, wars, covert operations and decades of memories he can’t always trust.
A globe-trotting structure gives Insomniac a natural way to dig into that history.
It should also help visually. Snow-covered wilderness, dense Tokyo streets and Madripoor’s rougher districts offer very different environments for combat and exploration.
There’s more to do than follow the main story
This isn’t being presented as a giant open-world game stuffed with map icons.
Instead, Insomniac has revealed optional activities woven into Logan’s travels.
His enhanced senses can lead players toward Nightmare Doors, which contain combat and traversal challenges. Collectible whisky bottles uncover pieces of Logan’s forgotten memories, while material crates contribute toward crafting additional suits. citeturn0search0
The whisky bottles are particularly appropriate.
A collectible is much more interesting when finding it actually tells us something about the character rather than simply moving a completion counter from 47% to 48%.
The suit system is substantial too.
Insomniac has referenced outfits inspired by Weapon X, Old Man Logan, Ultimate Wolverine and Patch, alongside simpler looks such as Logan’s tank top and leather jacket. Some headwear can be toggled, and players can also unlock different claw designs—including bone claws. citeturn0search0
Suits aren’t entirely cosmetic either, with unlocks tied to health improvements and additional claw options.
New Game Plus is already planned for launch
Players who want to keep going after the story won’t necessarily have to wait months for post-launch features.
Insomniac says New Game Plus, Mission Replay, Nightmare Challenges and Photo Mode will be available around launch, with Photo Mode arriving through a day-one update.
New Game Plus includes additional Techniques and level caps, while Mission Replay lets players revisit portions of the campaign. citeturn0search0
The game also includes more than 100 new, returning and improved accessibility features drawing on Insomniac’s previous work, including options such as Global Game Speed, High Contrast visuals, Audio Description in English and Strong Haptic Signals. citeturn0search0
Wolverine could be exactly the change Insomniac needed
The easiest thing Insomniac could have done after the success of Marvel’s Spider-Man was make another superhero game that followed the same basic rhythm.
Wolverine gives the studio an excuse not to.
Logan doesn’t move like Peter Parker. He doesn’t fight like him. His stories shouldn’t feel like his either.
Everything shown so far points toward something heavier and angrier: brutal close-range combat, a protagonist wrestling with a past he can’t fully remember, mutants facing an existential threat and a journey that moves from Canada to Japan and Madripoor rather than anchoring itself to one superhero playground.
There are still questions that trailers can’t answer.
How satisfying will combat feel after 15 or 20 hours? Will the progression systems deepen Logan’s abilities or simply make the numbers bigger? And, perhaps most importantly, can Insomniac make the man behind the claws as compelling as the act of using them?
We’ll know soon.
Marvel’s Wolverine launches September 15, 2026 for PlayStation 5.
